| The following is a list of the
job opportunities for volunteer hours at Flicka.
There is a wide range of jobs that need to be done throughout the year, so there
is something for everyone.
1. BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The board of directors is elected. Positions include: president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, equipment
and construction, harassment officer, coach liaison.
2. VOLUNTEER CO-ORDINATOR: duties include finding group reps and assigning jobs to each group, working with group reps to ensure
volunteers are found for all jobs etc.
3. GROUP REPRESENTATIVE: duties include monitoring and recording volunteer hours of members of the group, relaying information to the
telephone parents and assigning jobs within your training group.
4. GROUP TELEPHONE PARENT: relaying information to members of your training group, soliciting help, or informing them of their volunteer
times etc.
5. GYM MAINTENANCE: Gym maintenance requires a team of workers throughout the year when something needs to be built or repaired e.g.
cubbies, foam pits, painting, equipment repair, major and minor cleaning, some things require technical knowledge but you can still
help even if you don't have a trade or mechanical skill.
Flicka hosts three competitions each year and puts on one display at year end. Each of these events requires a
large number of volunteer hours before during and after. The following is a list and brief description of these jobs.
1. Administrative support for Kay: This involves helping Kay in the office with recording and tallying of scores, team scores, etc.
2. Admission; setting up the schedule of volunteers to run admissions tables at the meets, setting prices, signage, float, cash box, etc.
3. Announcers: Person acts as M. C. or announcer during the competition and year end display. At meets: announcing of rotations,
messages, at end announces the awards. Announcer at display has script to follow for each performance group and individual gymnast.
4. Awards: Ordering awards for all competitions for all levels etc, arranging for presenters for awards and having awards sorted and
ready to present after each session.
5. Concession: Ordering food, setting volunteer schedules, prices, signage, floats, cash box, etc.
6. Clean-up: Ensuring that the gym and judges/coaches' room has been cleaned after each day of competition.
7. Decorations: Includes the set-up of the judges table at each event apparatus with tablecloths, skirts, flowers, chairs, etc.
8. Equipment set-up and take-down: A crew will be required to prepare the gym for the competition or display. It involves moving the
mats and apparatus, and bleacher set up the night before and takedown after the competition or display, so they will be ready for
training the next day. Usually needs 15-20 people and more would even be better (is usually done on Friday night 6-9pm and Sunday 5-8pm
or whenever the meet finishes).
9. First Aid: Ensuring there is a first aid station on site at the competition, setting up a table with chairs, drinks, meeting and
greeting when they arrive at the gym.
10. Food for athletes: Ordering and handing out the food for each of the competitors after their session. (eg McDonalds or pizza and
drink)
11. Goody Bags: Seeking and collecting donations or ordering items for the goody bags. (These are things that each of the gymnasts gets
at the end of the session. Usually includes things such as pens, McDonalds coupons, T-shirts, key chains etc (use your imagination)
12. Invitations to Past Associates: Send out invitations to VIPs etc.
13. Judges: confirming judges for each session for each of the events.
14. Judges/coaches room: Setting up a hospitality room with snacks, drinks, and gifts for the judges (ordering food such as sandwiches,
cold cuts, veggie plates, or getting donations from other Flicka parents (home baking).
15. March In: Coordinate/organize the gymnasts, signs, music order, etc. for the March-In. Script for the announcer to read as the
gymnasts march in.
16. Marshalling(for display) looking after the back room, watching gymnasts, etc. Making sure that the groups line up in the proper
order; ensure gymnasts know where to go for individual routines during the display.
17. Minor officials: score, timers, flashers, runners. Scorers record the scores given by the judges (may involve some averaging of
scores, so these must be at least 13. ) Timers at each apparatus to time warm-up. Routines are timed for floor and beam. Falls are
timed for beam and bars. Warm-ups timed for bars, beam, floor and falls. (Younger gymnasts can work as runners 9-12yrs?)
18. Minor officials coordinator: obtain and assign the minor officials, sign in the minor officials for each of the events, also have
back-up minor officials . Confirm times with minor officials the day before.
19. Programs: layout, graphics, soliciting ads etc.
20. Raffles: Coordination of raffles: soliciting prizes, getting tickets and ticket sellers, advertising, displaying the raffle items.
Flicka holds an open house every year. This is an important way to advertise our programs. It requires a
coordinator and a few volunteers for the following:
1. Invitations: Send out invitations to media, schools, etc to draw as many people as possible.
2. Gym set-up: Set up for spectators.
3. Food: coffee, snacks purchased , solicit donations of baked goods from parents, set out and arrange for serving.
4. Publicity: phoning, faxing, signs, posters, copies of programs and information to promote open house.
5. Thank you's.
Organization of restaurant; planning and advertising menus; sign up sheets and advertising date, time, place,
invitations to alumnae, raffle-door prize.
