Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Xcel for?

The Xcel program is for athletes who have been selected to train in a more intensive program that allows them to develop their skill set and perform routines at local events. Athletes must be committed to training multiple days for up to 12hrs weekly, enjoy competing and performing, and who have a keen interest in learning to refine their gymnastics skills.

What is the difference between the levels in Xcel?

Xcel Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The differences between the four categories are skill level, gymnastics experience, and age/maturity.

The main difference, skill level, lies in the athlete’s skill portfolio on each of the four events (vault, bars, beam, and floor). Athletes must be able to perform certain skills to qualify for each level. Gymnastics experience is also a factor coaches will consider when placing athletes in a category. Age and Maturity are also factors coaches consider when grouping athletes. Coaches will look at the maturity of the athlete before placing them into the appropriate category.

How many competitions are offered per year for athletes? How many are mandatory?

Flicka will take athletes to multiple competitions per year. usually one per month between January-June. Athletes are encouraged to compete in as many as they can. Parents will be given a list of competitions and their tentative dates in the Fall of each season. Athletes are required to participate in a certain amount of competitions per year depending on their group level. Most groups must attend 3-4 events per competitive season.

What are the average fees for competitions?

Roughly $130-$170, depending on the competition, host club, and location of the event. The competitions that are hosted out of town will be more expensive to cover the cost of traveling coaches. Most venue hosts prepare a gift for each participating athlete and this is included in the

How does the Flicka office and their Coaches communicate to Parents?

Communication for the Xcel Program will be primarily through email. It is important that parents keep their contact information current with the Head Coach as well as on their online studio director account. Online accounts can be accessed through Uplifter. Monthly communication, competition information, uniforms and other important information will be sent out frequently. Please read all emails sent out from Xcel@flickagymclub.com.

What is Flicka’s makeup class policy; in case my child misses a training session? What about medical holds?

Flicka has a strict no make up class policy, which came into effect in January 2016. This is due to the coach to athlete ratio that must be followed as per Gymnastics Canada and Gymnastics BC requirements. For this reason, we cannot guarantee make-ups for missed training due to personal reasons.

If an athlete injures themself at training and will need an extended time off from training, a doctor’s note is needed to place the athlete on medical hold. You will be charged a portion of the monthly fee in order to hold your daughter's space in the program. If the athlete injures themselves outside of Flicka, we unfortunately cannot place your account on medical hold.

Is there a competition suit? What is the cost?

Yes, the competition suit cost ranges from $250-$300. Some consignment suits may be available for $125.00. All athletes are required to purchase one to match the rest of the team at the event competitions. Body suit sizing is done by the Head Coach and sizing should always be checked by parents prior to ordering. All information regarding bodysuits is also sent out to parents via email in the first few months of the season.
