North Shore Invitational

    The North Shore Invitational is an internationally recognized competition that has hosted teams from as far away as Japan, England, China, Australia, Hungary, the US. and from all across Canada. Our Philosophy

    Flicka strives to build a gymnastics program which introduces children to the discipline of gymnastics and develop strength, flexibility, agility and coordination. Our club is open to all ages and abilities. Each athlete's experience will be a fun and safe one. We are open to suggestions from our parents and participants and welcome any volunteers! The Flicka coaching philosophy is to assist all gymnasts in reaching their fullest potential through the best possible instruction in a professional and positive environment of mutual respect.
 

The Coaching Staff

    Flicka recognizes that our coaches play a critical role in the personal as well as the athletic development of the athletes and therefore insists that the Flicka staff consistently display personal standards that project a favorable image of their sport, the coaching profession and of their club. Our coaches are highly qualified and many have valuable competitive experience. Their combined knowledge of the sport is vast, creating one of the best gyms in Canada. All competitive coaches are all N.C.C.P. certified and keep their First Aid and CPR up to date.
 

Our Club

    The Flicka Gym Club was founded in 1962 by John and Louise Hemingway. Since then the club has grown from two gymnasts to an incredible 1,900! The club, located in Lonsdale Rec Centre, offers both competitive and recreational programs and has given gymnastics a high profile in the local community, BC and Canada. Our recent move to our new space has let us expand the club and fill it with a huge variety of gymnastics teaching equipment including 3 foam pits.

 

Why Gymnastics?

    Many people never consider gymnastics when looking for a recreational activity for their children. Here are some reasons why you should.

  • Gymnastics is the only sport that works total body strength, flexibility and aerobic development.
  • Gymnastics enhances gross motor skills.
  • Self-discipline is developed due to the very nature of the sport.
  • Self-confidence is built through individualized goals and accomplishments.
  • For any other sport, gymnastics is a way of developing strength and giving athletes that "added edge".
  • Early training results in increased kinesthetic awareness.
  • A NASA study showed that gymnasts have highly developed "vestibular mechanisms" which increase general learning, (academic as well as physical).
